DESSERT FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY FOR RESTAURATEURS AND HOTELIERS
Food photography in general is a very specialised area and there is no more unforgiving photographic challenge than when creating dessert food photography on location. With the advent of social media platforms and in particular Instagram with the vast array of filter effects available, it is easy to think that anyone can be a food photographer.
Smaller independent restaurants and hotels rarely require a large scale food photography shoot with the associated costs of hiring a photography studio, food stylist and home economist. The dessert menu tends to be more select and specialised which means these photography shoots can be successfully completed on location at the restaurant or hotel.
Working on location in restaurants and hotels does create some unique logistical hurdles which need to be overcome. Often working in a confined space without the luxury of a photography studio with everything at hand. Whilst at the same time making sure the working environment is kept safe, can be a real challenge.
Having to work around the clients normal opening hours may mean shooting at odd times of day. Liaising with chef to schedule enough time between dishes so they do not spoil before being photographed. Explaining in a tactful way to chef that plating up for photography can be very different then when serving a customer.
The food photographer must have a full set of photographic skills to create dessert food photography images that really do justice to the dishes. A large number of desserts have highly reflective surfaces and intricate geometric shapes which require an experienced photographic eye. Along with an extensive array of lighting equipment and skills to reproduce in camera successfully.
